First: know your loan

The type of relief you may qualify for depends on what kind of student loans you have. These are three key types of loans:

Federal loans held by the U.S. Government

These include Direct Loans issued from July 1, 2010 onward that are owned by the Department of Education.

Federal loans not held by the U.S. Government

These include FFELP loans issued before July 1, 2010 that are owned by a commercial lender.

Private loans

These loans are offered by private companies, such as a local bank or other private lenders.
